Room Divider

1994

Materials: Hard rock maple wood, bamboo

I struggled with what to do with the opening between the dining room and the kitchen. I had all kinds of ideas but after many considerations, once again, got back on track and decided to create another Japanese element. After much research and finding a number of possibilities, I decided to combine elements of a few things I came across and came up with the final design of the divider. I decided to construct it of hard rock maple which is what the stairs and the dining room table were made of. I had a friend who was an accomplished carpenter who was out of work and knowing how he was struggling offered him the opportunity to create the divider. He was thrilled and once finished, he and I installed it and I finished it by adding the bamboo handrail.
