Cape Cod Pontoon Arch
2014
Steel, wood, fiberglass pontoons, lights
Sue and I found these two pontoons at our local recycling center in Eastham on Cape Cod. There was no way I would leave them there. It took a few years but figured out how I wanted to use them. We needed something special and inviting to welcome people onto our rear deck and garden so I designed this arch. The super structure was designed out of 6X6s and bolted to the base 6X6 that was anchored to cement piers. Sue refinished the pontoons to a brilliant new blue. I could not design the fish so I left it to Sue and some friends. Once designed, I cut the two fish out of a 1/4 inch steel sheet that a friend gave me. The pontoons were bolted to the 6X6s using sections of 6 inch pvc pipe. Then the two fish were bolted onto the super-structure. It was put together as it lay on the decking and once finished we had friends and neighbors help with its erection including picture taking and champagne pouring. The steel plates were secured at the bases and two large steel supports were connected in the back. Two lights were installed behind the fish that were aimed at the tops of the pontoons and another light is positioned under the fish and shines down onto the walkway. It was a very exciting erection and is a true sight to see.
